Wounded cheetahs

27.08.2017
Since we started monitoring cheetahs in 2011, we have seen several cases of injured individuals and it is difficult to find out the cause of injury. In most of the occasions, animals recover by themselves. If cheetah cannot take care of itself, we seek veterinary and rangers’ assistance. Within the last few months, we came across five cases, involving one male and four females. In December, we saw Kisiri with three large and fresh wounds, which healed by the end of February. Fortunate Nashipai fully recovered after a car accident proving her name. Recently, we witnessed how Busara (one of Amani’s daughters) clung onto her nose with a dewclaw. It happened when Busara was trying to hold the prey with her paw. For a minute, she was struggling with the pain, circling at a spot and finally managed to release her nose. There was no visible wound and it was great to see that this incident did not affect cheetah health and behavior.
