It is difficult for a lone male to hold a territory when competing with a coalition. But if the male in the coalition loses partners, he does not hold the territory for long and turns into a floater. And therefore, the same area can be used by two or 3 different males. At the same time, young solitary males travel in search of safe and attractive areas, moving far from their birthplace. For example, Jasiri, grown in the northern Mara, at the age of 2 years, began to regularly appear in the reserve, and from May 2021 began to explore Sopa area. So called Sopa Boys Olaritoni and Olanyuani have dominated the area since October 2018. After sudden death of Olaritoni at the end of July 2021, his coalition-mate Olanyuani (Hard working in Maa) began to share the territory with Jaziri. From May 2022, Jaziri settled in Sopa, gradually replacing Olanyuani.
The Sopa area is interesting in that females with offspring from the Serengeti periodically appear there. One of them is Siligi, the sister of the famous male Olpadan, former leader of the Tano Bora coalition. She also became famous for showing up with seven 1.5-month-old cubs in 2019. Experience comes with age, and in the wild, some females manage to successfully raise their first litter only after 6 years of age. From December 2019 to January 2020, Siligi lost 5 cubs, and later moved to Serengeti with one remaining cub. She spends most of her time in the Serengeti and the southeastern part of Mary. Her next litter turned out to be more successful: out of 5 cubs, Siligi raised 3 males. When the cubs grew up, it was time to introduce them to new lands, and Siligi led them to the reserve. The meeting with Jasiri at Sopa was unexpected for both the female and her 16-month-old cubs. The male perceived the young males as competitors, periodically pouncing on them, while they tried to be closer to their mother. The female was non-receptive, and after pursuing the whole day, in the evening the male lost interest in her, finally attacked her sons and left. The female led the cubs in the opposite direction.
Apparently, it was not the first meeting of Siligi and Jasiri, since she behaved confidently and relatively calmly in his presence. It is quite possible that if next time Siligi will be in heat during their meeting with Jasiri, he will be able to father her new litter. The life expectancy of males is much shorter than that of females, and this makes it possible for females to mate with different males during their life path even during the same estrus, and thus enriching the genetic fund by giving birth from different males.
